Skype Telephone/video Service

Your Communications Committee has initiated an initial Skype capability as a service to church members. Skype is a system which provides for free telephone and videophone service to other Skype users anywhere in the world. Click here for some information on Skype. The primary purpose of this service for members is to allow them to communicate with family and friends in distant locations. Generally members can communicate by voice telephone to their family and friends but the church Skype service allows them to see and be seen by these people. Being able to talk and see the other person(s) can considerably improve the quality of interaction. For example, it can be used to show the new baby, dog, etc. which can be better than just talking about it. This can be especially valuable for people in remote locations, states, or in other countries.
This Skype service has been established as a test/pilot capability to judge interest of use. The Skype computer, camera, and headset has been temporarily set up in the Youth Directors office on the second floor of the church. In order to use the system, the member's relative or friend needs a Skype account and user name (this is free), a computer, inexpensive camera, headset, and high speed Internet access. Access to the system and assistance with use of the system is available by contacting the church or Norman Jones (512) 731-6050.
Another possible user of this service is military service members (or services such as Peace Corps). Many U.S. military service members have access to Skype services. The church system can help make free voice and video communications between the family and service member if the family does not have other access to a Skype capability.
